SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Thirty-five educators from Spartanburg school districts were among the first in the state to complete a specialized training program for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Converse College recently launched the program.

An estimated 1 in 59 children has ASD, according to research from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

Converse College says despite increasing numbers and more public awareness about autism, there are few education programs offering specialized instruction in ASD. The college says it’s currently the only institution in the state offering courses and professional development in autism.

The first participants were awarded certificates on Saturday.

New classes will be offered in fall.
